Joe Butts Shelby Township – MI

ButtsMy work functions on many different levels, but its main focus is discovery. Through a wide array of materials, the work asks the viewer to believe, trust, and discover a center within them.
As a mixed-media artist, I use several different materials and a number of techniques. (It is a blessing and a curse). I don’t like to limit myself and want to feel comfortable utilizing whatever material or technique the piece or series may call for. I particularly enjoy combining materials. I create everything from delicate greeting cards with fine bead work to large scale cast concrete installation.
As of late, I find myself gravitating to mostly clay, wood, stone, and found objects.  What inspires the work is nature and my belief that all things perform within a cycle. I try to convey that theme with my material choices and sensibility
