My art is a reflection of my desire to express my personality in a non-verbal form. I am able to display my emotions using color and technique and I derive great satisfaction from being able to show my true feelings through my painting. I work wet in wet and also in layers, using many transparent washes to build up the values. My preference of paper is 400 Lb rough Arches
Painting is my vehicle to creatively express and share my impressions of favorite experiences that I have in my life. The process of painting is every bit as exciting and rewarding to me as is the finished painting. I am more interested in conveying my impressions and capturing the emotional qualities of an experience than I am in rendering a realistic image. My hope is that others will enjoy my interpretations of these experiences through my work.
I find transparent watercolor to be the perfect medium for me. Left to its natural attributes, it will move and flow and create wonderful visual affects. The balancing act of controlling the medium and “letting it go” is a continual, fun and exciting learning experience.
I am a student of time. In my work I am attempting to capture not only a place but a mood and moment, or in some cases the sum of moments. 4 dimensions, Length x Width x Depth x Time.
I use a DSLR to capture my images. I print them myself using an archival inkjet printer. I mat and frame them using only archival materials.
Creatures of habit, we move through our days reliant on visual shorthand. We see so little of what there is to see, and most of that gets dismissed as soon as we put a name to it. We subject the visual to the tyranny of the verbal. I taught myself photography by walking the same streets each day with a borrowed camera. Each afternoon I took 36 pictures, developed the film, and waited for the film to dry. Each evening I struggled in the darkroom to fashion photos that would tell in intimate terms not just what I had seen, but what it felt like to be there on that very day. Looking to find something emotionally true by being completely where I was a telling a story about a specific place, specific people, at a specific time. I spent years as a photojournalist trying to do the same thing. Now these very personal photos all archivally produced, printed on 100% cotton rag paper and finished with acid-free and UV protecting materials.
I design and construct sterling silver and 18K gold contemporary jewelry accented with semi precious gemstones and agates. My work is fabricated from metal sheet, wire, and tubing. Techniques I use include forging, reticulation, roller printing, etching and oxidation. Texture, color, and dimension are elements that I incorporate to achieve the impact of a fine work of sculpture only on a much smaller scale.
Ever since a very early age, I have liked to create and discover the wonders of playing with materials. Being an artist became a way of life while every little mundane thing was absorbed and an inspiration. The change of seasons, the shape of a slice of bread, and the rhythm of a cat’s stealthy crawl; these are just a handful of things that inspire me. My many travels have had a big impact on my work and the urge to use plenty of colors. Humor in my art is often used as a reminder of our temporary place in the universe.
Trained as a painter, one can see the color sense in my mixed media and sterling jewelry. Studying both art and silver smithing, I combine my metal smith techniques with paint and recycled objects to make jewelry.
The jewelry I create is crafted from a bezel made from silver, while inside, a little collage tells a story. A layer of clear resin is poured on top and smoothed to enhance and protect the piece.
